VICTORIANS PUNISHED FOR SAVING ENERGY AND REDUCING BILLS

Posted on 15. Jul, 2014 in News

The Napthine Government supports a massive price slug on families who reduce their energy use.

A major Australian energy retailer, Simply Energy, is imposing a $51-a-year ‘supply levy’ on all Victorian solar customers.

Napthine Government Energy Minister, Russell Northe, backs the price rise.

It leaves the way open for other retailers to follow suit, affecting up to 430,000 Victorians who have invested in solar energy.

The news comes after the Napthine Government axed the Victorian Energy Efficiency Target, which also helped people reduce their energy bills.

Quotes attributable to Ms D’Ambrosio

“Ordinary families shouldn’t be punished for saving energy and saving money on their household bills.”

“With car rego and council rates increasing, Victorian families are already finding it harder to make ends meet.”

“Under the Liberals, our environment goes backwards and our power bills go upwards.”

Key Facts

• Simply Energy is the retail arm of GDF Suez Australia. A new, $51-a-year fee will now apply to solar customers to be connected to the grid.
• GDF Suez owns the Hazelwood coal mine. Earlier this year, the mine burnt for 100 days and the Napthine Government botched the emergency response.
