The Baillieu Government will waste hundreds of thousands of dollars on a Federal Court challenge to turn a nationally significant national park into a cow paddock, Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change Lisa Neville said today.

Ms Neville said it was ludicrous for the Baillieu Government to ask the Federal Court to review the Federal Governments recent decision to ban cattle grazing in the Alpine National Park.

“Today’s action by the Baillieu Government proves just how farcical they are and what extraordinary lengths they will go to please the National Party,” Ms Neville said.

“Environment Minister Ryan Smith who has essentially been stripped of various ministerial environmental powers by the National Party has been dragged kicking and screaming to take this ludicrous action.

“Mr Baillieu and Mr Smith are now going to waste potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars on a high court challenge that even the legal fraternity sees has no chance.

“Despite departmental and independent scientific advice opposing grazing for fire mitigation, and the Federal Government banning cattle in national parks, the Baillieu Government is now hell-bent wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars on a frivolous court challenge for a few national party mates.

“Instead of developing environmental policy for the benefit of all Victorians, the Baillieu Government would prefer to pander to National Party interests.”
