Patients in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs are the latest victims of the Baillieu Government’s savage funding cuts to the health sector, Acting Shadow Minister for Health Danielle Green said today.

Reports today reveal Box Hill Hospital will be forced to close 32 beds and reduce its elective surgery capacity because of a lack of State Government funding, while the equivalent of six full-time
nursing roles could be cut at Maroondah Hospital.

Ms Green said that today’s reports were concerning, but not surprising given the Baillieu Government had chosen to cut $481.9 million from health.

“It’s not good enough that this Government is happy to put dollars ahead of patient care,” Ms Green said.

“Mr Davis needs to understand that his savage cost-saving measures are hurting patients.

“Hospitals need more funding, not less, but the Baillieu Government is intent on slashing almost half a billion dollars from the health system.”

“This will mean less patients can access the care they need.

“It will mean longer wait times for patients needing surgery, and could force residents in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs to travel for health care.”

Ms Green said the Liberal Member for Mitcham, Dee Ryall, needed to stand up for local families and tell the Premier to end the funding cuts at Box Hill Hospital.

“Ms Ryall needs to put local families ahead of the Liberal party and tell the Mr Baillieu to make health a priority,” she said.

“As a former nurse, Ms Ryall should understand why our hospitals need to be supported by her Government.”

Ms Green also called on Liberal MPs in Melbourne’s east to voice their concerns about potential cuts to nursing staff at Maroondah Hospital.

“These cuts to nursing staff mean communities, including the Yarra Ranges, will be struggling to get the health care they need.

“Why aren’t the Liberal MPs, including David Hodgett, Brad Battin, and Heidi Victoria, calling for their own Government to stop the funding cuts?

“Residents in Melbourne’s east deserve to have local members who stand up for their needs, not MPs who sits back and watches their own Government dismantle the health system.”

Clayton MP Hong Lim said this is terrifing news for local residents in the East and asks, “Is Monash Medical Centre next?”
