The Liberal-National Government has failed to build one new fire refuge or a Neighbourhood Safer Place in more than 10 months, Shadow Minister for Bushfire Response Jacinta Allan said today.

“In Opposition, Peter Ryan and Ted Baillieu spent their time calling for more Neighbourhood Safer Places and fire refuges to be introduced, yet, since coming to Government, have failed to deliver,” Ms Allan said.

“While using the fear of bushfire risk as a political weapon, Mr Ryan ignored the realities and challenges associated with establishing and maintaining fire refuges and NSPs.
“We are just weeks away from the start of the bushfire season but the Liberal-National Government don’t appear ready to make sure high-risk communities are protected.”

Ms Allan said the Liberal-National Government had:

  • Failed to build any new community fire refuges;
  • Left half of the 52 high risk communities without a neighbourhood safer place;
  • Released new Bushfire Prone Area maps that have excluded many high risk communities;
  • Failed to meet the promised 30 September deadline for making important fire safety changes to the Victorian Planning Provisions;
  • Delayed the states annual fire action week by over a month, delaying important fire preparation messages being broadcast to communities and landowners; and
  • Refused to release the final report of the power line bushfire safety task force.

“The Liberal-National Government promised action on protecting high fire risk communities but this list of failures shows they can’t be trusted to deliver,” she said.

“The Government needs to urgently explain to the community what action it’s taken to establish more fire refuges and NSPs.”
