VICTORIANS URGED TO NOMINATE THEIR LOCAL SPORTS HEROES

Posted on 29. Sep, 2010 in Victoria

Victorians have just one week left to nominate their local sports heroes, sporting clubs and associations for the Brumby Labor Government’s Community Sport and Recreation Awards.

Sports Minister James Merlino said the awards – now in their 14th year – provided a great opportunity for Victorians to acknowledge those who had invested their time and energy to sport at the grassroots level and made a real difference in their local communities.

“Victorians love their sport and that’s why our local sports clubs and associations are so important in ensuring communities are strong, happy, healthy and active,” Mr Merlino said.

“Strong sporting clubs support stronger communities and stronger families, that’s why these awards are important as they go a long way to recognising the people, sports clubs and organisations that make local communities tick.”

Mr Merlino said the categories for the 2010 Community Sport and Recreation Awards included:

  • Outstanding Club Award;
  • Community Participation Award;
  • Young Sportsperson Award;
  • Senior Sportsperson Award;
  • Diversity Award;
  • Volunteer Involvement Award; and
  • Unsung Sporting Hero Award.

Mr Merlino said the awards were a perfect opportunity to acknowledge those in the community who work tirelessly for their club or organisation, often without reward.

“While individuals and clubs will be recognised for their efforts in front of their peers, the Victorian Government will also financially reward the winners and finalists across the seven Award categories,” Mr Merlino said.

“Contributions can involve coaching, volunteering, administering or just going that extra yard to help create opportunities for people to participate in sport and physical activity, not just at clubs, but in local community organisations or nearby facilities.

“Award winners are an inspiration to their communities, and we’re looking forward to hearing the stories of local people who get others involved in local sport and recreation.”

Nominations close Tuesday 5 October 2010. The Victorian Government’s Community Sport and Recreation Awards will be held at Melbourne’s AAMI Park on Wednesday, 27 October, 2010.

Nominations are now open and can be made online at www.sport.vic.gov.au.
