LOCAL COUNCILS ‘INSPIRED’ FOR 2010 SENIORS FESTIVAL

Victorians from all corners of the State are set to enjoy the 2010 Seniors Festival thanks to over $205,000 in Brumby Labor Government grants to help councils hold events from 3 to 10 October.

“The festival is Victoria’s largest and most popular statewide event for seniors,” Ms Neville said.

“Now in its 29th year, this year’s festival program offers everything from fine art to golf tournaments.

“With over 1,000 free or low-cost festival events and activities across Victoria there is something to suit everyone.

“Last year more than 170,000 people attended events or took advantage of the many special offers for seniors during festival week and I encourage all Victorian seniors to pick up a program to discover the great range of events on offer this year.

“Every year local governments across Victoria play an important role in the festival by staging hundreds of free and low-cost activities.”

Ms Neville said the festival would kick off in style at Federation Square on Sunday 3 October with a program of over 50 activities, displays and performances.

Highlights of this year’s festival include a regional country concert series, the ‘Veteran’s Golf Classic’, the ACMI Seniors Film Festival, and the Givoni statewide walks program.

Ms Neville said the festival’s theme ‘Be inspired’ reflected the Government’s vision to encourage people to get out and try new things, participate in their community and lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

“We know that participation in recreational activities, lifelong learning and community activity all improve the health and wellbeing of older people. This festival offers senior Victorians the opportunity to do all this and more,” she said.

“I hope to see many people out there enjoying themselves and experiencing new things at this year’s festival.”

Ms Neville said that getting to festival events would be made easier by free public transport for Seniors Card holders on all metropolitan train, tram and bus services and all regional town bus services during festival week from 3-10 October. V/Line services will be free to Seniors Card holders on 5,6,7,9 and 10 October.
