LAST CHANCE TO NOMINATE A DESERVING SENIOR

Posted on 20. Jul, 2010 in Victoria

With the closing date for nominations fast approaching, Victorians are being urged to nominate outstanding seniors in their community for the 2010 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.

Minister for Senior Victorians Lisa Neville encouraged all Victorians to nominate seniors who have made a difference in their community

“Senior Victorians give so much to our State and the Victorian Senior of the Year awards provide us with an opportunity to recognise these efforts,” Ms Neville said.

“Nominations close this Friday so if you know someone whose extraordinary commitment, energy and passion are truly inspirational then I urge you to nominate them for an award. It’s a great way to celebrate their achievements and thank them.”

To be eligible for an award, nominees must be over 60 years of age, an Australian citizen and resident of Victoria and have made an exceptional contribution to their community.

Awards will be presented in four categories: the Premier’s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year, Council on the Ageing (COTA) Victoria Senior Achiever Awards, Go for Your Life Award and Veteran Community Award.

Ms Neville said the Premier’s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year and the COTA Victoria Senior Achiever Awards would be presented to seniors who had made an outstanding contribution to their local community.
“Last year’s Victorian Senior of the Year – Elizabeth Walpole – was recognised for her exceptional contribution to the Whorouly, Wangaratta and Myrtleford communities in palliative care, community health and environmental advocacy and in helping rural women combat social isolation through technology,” she said.
“Seniors who are helping create active and healthy communities can be nominated for the Go for Your Life Award while the Veteran Community Award is presented to a senior who has made an exceptional contribution to the veteran community.”
