Footy fans will be able to watch every minute live of tomorrow’s epic AFL Grand Final replay between Collingwood and St Kilda on giant screens at Melbourne’s newest stadium AAMI Park.
And supporters will also be dancing all night long to international superstar Lionel Richie and other first-class entertainment at a free concert to mark the climax of the AFL season.
Sports Minister James Merlino today said were could soak up all the action of one of the biggest days on Melbourne’s sporting calendar and join in the celebrations of a Premiership win.
“What better place to be than Melbourne during the AFL Finals,” Mr Merlino said.
“The AFL Grand Final is the major highlight on Melbourne’s world-class sporting calendar and tomorrow’s rematch between Collingwood and St Kilda promises to be another blockbuster.
“Our AAMI Park Live Site provides a great opportunity for fans unable to secure a ticket to the match to join in all the celebrations of the big day and get a glimpse of their premiership heroes.”
Mr Merlino said and fans could watch every minute of the match on three large screens, including a purpose-built 11-metre giant monitor.
Players will be presented to supporters after the match on a specially-built stage and the stadium’s 1500 LED lights and will switch to the team’s winning colours after the match.
“Fans will be able to watch the match live and uninterrupted and will be treated to first-class entertainment before the winning team is presented on stage after the game,” Mr Merlino said.
“Where else but Melbourne could you see 100,000 fans fill a sporting stadium and fill another one next door to watch the game on the big screen?
Mr Merlino said the Brumby Labor Government had worked closely with the AFL and Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust so fans could join the celebrations of the AFL Grand Final.
AFL Chief Operating Officer, Gillon McLachlan thanked the Victorian Government for its support of the AAMI Park Live Site and urged fans to come out and support their teams.
“On behalf of the AFL, I want to thank the Victorian Government for its support in making AAMI Park available to the public to not only watch the 2010 Toyota AFL Grand Final Replay but also a post-match concert featuring the legendary Lionel Richie,” Mr McLachlan said.
The live site will be a dry event and gates open at midday – Lionel Richie will perform from 7.20pm, while the winning team and Premiership Cup will be presented on stage at 8pm.
