A cast of more than 2500 Victorian students is gearing up to take centre stage at one of Australia’s biggest arena productions.

In just under three weeks Hisense Arena will be ablaze with colour for the exhilarating song and dance extravaganza, Shine On 2010: Victorian State Schools Spectacular.

Education Minister Bronwyn Pike visited rehearsal studios in Collingwood on Saturday for a sneak preview of the dazzling costumes and larger-than-life wigs which feature in the show.

“It is very exciting to see the hard work that is going on behind-the-scenes to bring this inspirational production to life,” Ms Pike said.

“The Victorian Government is proud to offer our students a chance to work with industry professionals to get valuable performing arts experience, regardless of where they live. The State Schools Spectacular has launched the careers of some of Australia’s most popular performers, and I’m sure this year’s show will be no different.”

Rehearsals are well underway for the 100-piece orchestra, 1100-voice choir, 1100 dancers, 30 vocalists, 20 back-up singers and 15 puppeteers from about 190 government schools across Victoria.

“The Spectacular gives every student a unique opportunity to improve their performance skills and put on an unforgettable show,” Ms Pike said.

“I would like to wish them the best of luck for what will be a truly unforgettable experience for cast and audiences alike.”

Shine On 2010 is a story about respect, friendship and triumph in the face of adversity, told through a narrative of dance and music including Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours, The Verve’s Bitter Sweet Symphony, Beethoven, and other much-loved classics.

Acclaimed comedian and director Neill Gladwin, best known for his Sydney 2000 Lawnmower Man segment and as one half of the internationally acclaimed comedy duo Los Trios Ringbarkus, will direct this year’s show.

Channel 7 is proudly supporting Shine On 2010: Victorian State Schools Spectacular.  A special broadcast with behind-the-scenes highlights will screen in October – stay tuned for telecast times.

Tickets for three shows at Hisense Arena on September 18 and 19 are available at Ticketek on 132 849, at $27.50 (adult), $22.50 (concession) and $14 (18 and under).  For more information please visit:
