CHILDREN’S SERVICES GUIDE NOW AVAILABLE IN 16 LANGUAGES

More Victorian families will be better informed about their rights and what to look for when choosing and using children’s services in Victoria thanks to comprehensive parent information now available in 16 languages.

Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Maxine Morand said the comprehensive Children’s Services guide released last year had now been translated to increase access to important information for families about their rights and the responsibilities of children’s services.

“The Brumby Labor Government understands that parents want the very best care for their children and a family’s cultural background should be no barrier to this fundamental right,” Ms Morand said.

“Parents who have English as a second language can now go online and access information about children’s services, including kindergarten, childcare and family day care.

“These translated guides will help parents to be sure that their child’s care is always in the best possible hands.

“The guides include information on what services are required to have a licence, information on children’s services legislation and where to go to make a complaint.”

The 16 languages include Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Chin, Dari, Dinka, Karen, Khmer, Korean, Nuer, Punjabi, Somali, Tigrinya, Turkish, Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese.

Ms Morand said the guides were another example of how the Brumby Labor Government was ensuring families could access high quality children’s services.

“We are working hard to ensure that Victorian children’s services meet high standards of care for our children and ensuring parents are fully informed about their rights and what to expect is an important part of that work,” she said.
