CALLS TO APPLY FOR A TAXI LICENCE FROM MONDAY JUNE 28

Melbourne taxi passengers, especially those with special needs, will soon benefit from more reliable and timely services with the release of 530 taxi licences including 330 wheelchair accessible taxis.

Public Transport Minister Martin Pakula said applications would be accepted from Monday for the new licence release.

“People with special needs, those who use wheelchairs and people who use taxis on the weekends and during major events, complain of an insufficient number of taxis being available,” Mr Pakula said.

“We have listened to Victorians and have responded to their calls for additional taxis and importantly, up to 330 of these licences will be for wheelchair accessible taxis.

“This is a significant boost to the wheelchair accessible fleet in Melbourne, and ensures that people with mobility issues can access taxi services more easily.

“The extra licences will more than double the number of wheelchair accessible taxis on our streets, reduce waiting times and improve passengers’ experience.”

Mr Pakula said the new licences offered an opportunity for individuals and businesses to join Victoria’s taxi industry.

“Operating a taxi is a flexible, rewarding career choice for thousands of Victorians who enjoy the benefits of being their own boss and developing their own business,” he said.

The application forms for the Greater Melbourne Taxi Licence Release will be available from midday on Monday 28 June.

Greater Melbourne Taxi Licence Release Application Packs will also be available from the Victorian Taxi Directorate Customer Service Centre, the Melbourne Airport Taxi Inspection Centre or by calling the Victorian Taxi Directorate Call Centre on 1800 638 802.
