BAILLIEU BREAKS $648.8 MILLION WORTH OF HEALTH PROMISES – FROM OPPOSITION

The Opposition’s official election costings documents reveal that Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu has broken $648.8 million worth of his own health pledges – selling out Victorian patients with false promises, the Minister for Health, Daniel Andrews, said today.

Mr Andrews called on Mr Baillieu to apologise to the communities across the State for his $648.8 million worth of broken health promises, which include:

  • Mr Baillieu broke his promise to match Labor’s $250 million commitment to build the new Monash Children’s Centre;
  • Mr Baillieu broke his promise to invest $165 million for the Eye and Ear Hospital;
  • Mr Baillieu broke his promise to match Labor’s $50 million expansion of Frankston Hospital;
  • Mr Baillieu broke his promise of a new Wallan ambulance station;
  • Mr Baillieu broke his promise to build a new ambulance station at Beaufort;
  • Mr Baillieu broke his promise to set up a motorcycle paramedic unit in inner Melbourne;
  • Mr Baillieu broke his undercosted promise to build a helipad at Ballarat Hospital;
  • Mr Baillieu broke his promise to fund Ballarat District Nursing and Healthcare to redevelop its Sturt Street premises;
  • Mr Baillieu broke his promise to provide increased support for bush nursing centres; and
  • Mr Baillieu broke his promise for a new CT scanner in Maryborough.

“Mr Baillieu pretends he could run our hospitals – but Mr Baillieu is just not up to the job,” Mr Andrews said.

“Mr Baillieu pretends that he could run Victoria’s $45 billion budget – but Mr Baillieu is just not up to the job.

“No wonder Mr Baillieu failed to show up for the release of the Opposition’s election policies. They represent one of the biggest frauds on Victorian patients in the State’s history.”

Mr Andrews said parents in Melbourne’s south east would feel completely betrayed by Mr Baillieu’s failure to fund the Monash Children’s Centre.

“Mr Baillieu would completely fail the children and families of Melbourne’s south-east should he ever become Premier of our State,” Mr Andrews said.

“Mr Baillieu has totally neglected the people of Frankston by breaking his promise to match Labor’s $50 million redevelopment of Frankston Hospital.

“It is disgraceful that Mr Baillieu used the Eye and Ear Hospital for a media opportunity and then broke his promise to provide $165 million for the hospital.”

“The official documents make absolutely no mention whatsoever of these projects. They are not mentioned let alone funded,” Mr Andrews said.

“As if that wasn’t enough, Mr Baillieu has allocated just $50 million for the $165 million for the expansion of Geelong Hospital and the second hospital for Geelong.”

Mr Andrews said Mr Baillieu had treated people in regional Victoria with contempt by failing to appropriately fund his promises in Bendigo and Geelong.

Mr Andrews said that given the size and scale of Mr Baillieu’s broken promises, there was now an enormous question mark over his commitment to build a new Bendigo Hospital.
