A THOUSAND REASONS FOR SENIORS TO CELEBRATE

Posted on 18. Aug, 2010 in Victoria

Seniors across Victoria can start planning a week of festivities with the release today of the official program for the Brumby Labor Government 2010 Victorian Seniors Festival.

Launching the program at Melbourne’s Federation Square today, Minister for Senior Victorians Lisa Neville said the 2010 festival was set to be the best yet.

“In its 29th year, this year’s festival program offers everything from fine art to golf tournaments,” Ms Neville said.

“With over 1,000 free or low cost festival events and activities across Victoria there is something to suit everyone.

“Last year more than 170,000 people attended events or took advantage of the many special offers for seniors during festival week and I encourage all Victorian seniors to pick up a program to discover the great range of events on offer at this year’s festival.”

Ms Neville said the Victorian Seniors Festival ran from October 3 to 10 with events across metropolitan Melbourne and regional and rural Victoria.
“We know how important it is for seniors to live an active and healthy life and that is why we are proud to be running a festival that also celebrates the contribution older Victorians make to our community,” she said.

“This year’s program features many opportunities for sporting and physical activity including bushwalks, bowls and a veterans golf tournament as well as information sessions for seniors on health, financial and legal issues.

“It also includes free World Music and Orchestra Victoria concerts at Melbourne Town Hall and the jazz and cabaret evenings.

“The Melbourne Town Hall will be the Festival Hub, offering a great environment where seniors can get all the details of what’s on while they catch up and relax with a free tea and coffee.”

Ms Neville said getting to festival events would be easy with free public transport for Seniors Card holders on all metropolitan train, tram and bus services and all regional town bus services during festival week.

Seniors travelling in regional Victoria can take advantage of free travel on V/Line rail and coach services on October 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 October.

Event programs for the 2010 Victorian Seniors Festival are now available at all Coles stores, State Trustee offices, local councils, libraries and neighbourhood houses.
