A re-elected Brumby Labor Government will provide an $800,000 funding boost so Victorian students can return to the stage for the annual Rock Eisteddfod Challenge.

Youth Affairs Minister James Merlino said the Brumby Labor Government would contribute $200,000 a year over four years to the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge Foundation so the dance, drama and design spectacular could return to Victoria in 2011 as part of a national competition.

“The Rock Eisteddfod has a proud history and we want it to return to Victoria as a truly national competition,” Mr Merlino said.

“Thousands of Victorian students have previously taken part in the annual dance, drama and design spectacular since it was first established more than three decades ago.

“Over the last 10 years the Victorian Government has provided over $1 million to the popular event but unfortunately due to a lack of support from other states this year’s event was scrapped.

Mr Merlino said the Brumby Labor Government had provided more than $100,000 in funding for this year’s Go for your life VicMoves event which showcases the varied talents of students. This was a great opportunity for Victorian students in the absence of the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge.

“We want the Rock Eisteddfod to return and that’s why a re-elected Labor Government has committed $800,000 over the next four years to a national event.”

Mr Merlino said the Brumby Labor Government’s commitment was conditional on the Rock Eisteddfod returning as a truly national event with support from other states. Victorian funding should support Victorian students.

“If the competition is not held nationally, our funding would be used to support a similar school-based performance event to ensure that Victorian secondary school students have the opportunity to compete and establish career pathways into the performing arts,” Mr Merlino said.

“Victorians love turning out for world-class cultural events, that’s why we are supporting our next generation of performers take to the stage in the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge.”
