Chinese community: discrimination
Posted on 31. May, 2009 by admin in Speeches
I wish to express my outrage at the absurdity surrounding this latest bout of hysteria about Chinese people and China. The issue here is not the friendship between federal Minister for Defence Joel Fitzgibbon’s family and Chinese businesswoman Helen Liu; nor is it the two trips to China the minister forgot to report. The issue is not the unsubstantiated security risk claimed due to Ms Liu’s alleged business connections to the Chinese government — it is common and open knowledge that to do business in China you have to deal with the Chinese government because it owns and controls business over there.
The real and tragic issue here is that after more than 150 years of Chinese settlement in this country, Chinese people are still treated with suspicion, disdain and contempt by people with condescending, patronising and belligerent attitudes.

BRUMBY LABOR GOVERNMENT’S ENERGY SAVER INCENTIVE
Dear Residents,
The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to help local families save money on their energy bills whilst keeping warm this winter.
Whether you are renting or own your own home, protecting your home from the winter chill is now easier and cheaper, with discounts and special offers available to upgrade heating, install energy efficient light globes and draught-proof your home through the Brumby Labor Government’s Energy Saver Incentive.
For many Victorian families, heating makes up the largest part of energy bills. Through participating businesses, the Energy Saver Incentive provides discounts and special offers on a range of energy efficient measures, including some which will help you heat your home for less this winter.
Incentives can range from $50 to benefits worth several thousand dollars, with some of the biggest savings to be made by switching from old electric heating to efficient gas heating.
If you are renting, some of the ways you can cut your energy bill this winter include;
• Installing energy efficient light globs
• Maximise heat retention with close-fitting lined curtains and blinds
• Turning off appliances at the wall
Or if you own your own home, some of the steps you can take include;
• Double-glazing windows
• Sealing gaps around doors and windows
• Buy high-rated ceiling insulation and use high-rated wall insulation in your building or renovating
• Drought-proofing vents and chimneys
A full list of businesses participating in the Energy Saver incentive can be found by visiting www.saveenergy.vic.gov.au. Further information on how to heat your home more efficiently can be found by visiting www.resourcesmart.vic.gov.au.
I hope this information has provided you with some useful tips with how you and your family can save money on your energy bills this winter.
Kind regards,
Hong Lim MP

TELEMARKETING & DOOR TO DOOR SALES – KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Dear Residents,
Unsolicited sales people and intrusive door knockers are becoming more of a problem in our area but you can do something about it.
Increasingly, I am hearing complaints about sales people pressuring residents into unwanted contracts or products that are too good to be true.
However, there are rules these door sales people MUST comply with, such as:
• If you ask the seller to leave, he or she must leave immediately.
• Sellers are required to provide evidence of their identity.
• A seller must tell you that they are not allowed to stay longer than one hour unless you consent in writing
• Any agreement that you make with a door to door seller to purchase goods or services must be in writing.
• You ARE allowed to cancel an agreement with a door to door seller within 10 days if you change your mind.
If you are still approached or contacted by someone you can report them to Consumer Affairs Victoria on 1300 558 181.
If you would like more information or a Do Not Knock sticker, please to call my office on 9543 6081.
Yours sincerely,
Hong Lim MP
